Although chronic procrastinators may assume that their brains are wired entirely differently from the brains of people who make a habit of jumping in right away and doing whatever needs to be done, I disagree.

Yes, that's what should happen. But you know yourself well enough to know what actually will happen. Despite your good intentions, you'll end up putting off the unpleasant task until the very last minute − maybe a couple of days before its due − and in a panic, with the clock feeling like a knife in your back,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you'll get the report done on time − like you always do.
Suppose there's a report that you absolutely dread working on that's due in a month. You estimate that the report will take several extremely unpleasant hours to complete. You have the time available, and you tell yourself that you really should just tackle the task right away and get it off your back instead of letting it nibble away at you for the next few weeks.
Let’s face it, procrastination sucks. It’s exhausting, stressful,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it can do a number on your self-esteem.
To defeat procrastination:
But suppose this time, instead of just relying on your good intentions, you deliberately change the situation to make the last minute come sooner. You do it in a way that at first glance seems nearly insane. You write out a check for $5,000 to a political party you absolutely despise. Then you give the check to your assistant with strict orders to mail it next Tuesday unless you show up with the finished report before then.

Controlling, or Implementing, the Investment Plan will be accomplished best by those who are least emotional, most decisive, naturally calm, patient, generally conservative (not politically), and self actualized. Investing is a long-term, personal, goal orientated, non- competitive, hands on, decision-making process that does not require advanced degrees or a rocket scientist IQ. In fact, being too smart can be a problem if you have a tendency to over analyze things. It is helpful to establish guidelines for selecting securities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and for disposing of them. For example, limit Equity involvement to Investment Grade, NYSE, dividend paying, profitable, and widely held companies. Don’t buy any stock unless it is down at least 20% from its 52 week high, and limit individual equity holdings to less than 5% of the total portfolio. Take a reasonable profit (using 10% as a target) as frequently as possible. With a 40% Income Allocation, 40% of profits and dividends would be allocated to Income Securities.
Monitoring Investment Performance the Wall Street way is inappropriate and problematic for goal-orientated investors. Here’s how, based on the three basic objectives we’ve been talking about: Growth of Base Income, Profit Production from Trading,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Overall Growth in Working Capital.
So is there really such a thing as an Income Portfolio that needs to be managed? Or are we really just dealing with an investment portfolio that needs its Asset Allocation tweaked occasionally as we approach the time in life when it has to provide the yacht… and the gas money to run it? By using Cost Basis (Working Capital) as the number that needs growing, by accepting trading as an acceptable, even conservative, approach to portfolio management, and by focusing on growing income instead of ego, this whole retirement investing thing becomes significantly less scary. So now you can focus on changing the tax code, reducing health care costs, saving Social Security, and spoiling the grandchildren.
Profit Production is the happy face of the market value volatility that is a natural attribute of all securities. To realize a profit, you must be able to sell the securities that most investment strategists (and accountants) want you to marry up with! Successful investors learn to sell the ones they love, and the more frequently (yes, short term), the better. This is called trading, and it is not a four-letter word. When you can get yourself to the point where you think of the securities you own as high quality inventory on the shelves of your personal portfolio boutique, you have arrived. You won’t see WalMart holding out for higher prices than their standard markup, and neither should you. Reduce the markup on slower movers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and sell damaged goods you’ve held too long at a loss if you have to, and, in the thick of it all, try to anticipate what your standard, Wall Street Account Statement is going to show you… a portfolio of equity securities that have not yet achieved their profit goals and are probably in negative Market Value territory because you’ve sold the winners and replaced them with new inventory… compounding the earning power! Similarly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you’ll see a diversified group of income earners, chastised for following their natural tendencies (this year), at lower prices,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which will help you increase your portfolio yield and overall cash flow. If you see big plus signs, you are not managing the portfolio properly.
You don’t have to be a professional Investment Manager to professionally manage your investment portfolio, but you do need to have a long term plan and know something about Asset Allocation… a portfolio organization tool that is often misunderstood and almost always improperly used within the financial community. It’s important to recognize,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well, that you do not need a fancy computer program or a glossy presentation with economic scenarios, inflation estimators,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and stock market projections to get yourself lined up properly with your target. Principle needs to be at the foundation of your Investment Plan; an emphasis on Working Capital will help you Organize, and Control your investment portfolio.

Base Income includes the dividends and interest produced by your portfolio, without the realized capital gains that should actually be the larger number much of the time. No matter how you slice it, your long-range comfort demands regularly increasing income, and by using your total portfolio cost basis as the benchmark, it’s easy to determine where to invest your accumulating cash. Since a portion of every dollar added to the portfolio is reallocated to income production, you are assured of increasing the total annually. If Market Value is used for this analysis, you could be pouring too much money into a falling stock market to the detriment of your long-range income objectives.
Working Capital Growth (total portfolio cost basis) just happens, and at a rate that will be somewhere between the average return on the Income Securities in the portfolio and the total realized gain on the Equity portion of the portfolio. It will actually be higher with larger Equity allocations because frequent trading produces a higher rate of return than the more secure positions in the Income allocation. But, and this is too big a but to ignore as you approach retirement, trading profits are not guaranteed and the risk of loss (although minimized with a sensible selection process) is greater than it is with Income Securities. This is why the Asset Allocation moves from a greater to a lesser Equity percentage as you approach retirement.
Planning for Retirement should focus on the additional income needed from the investment portfolio, and the Asset Allocation formula [relax, 8th grade math is plenty] needed for goal achievement will depend on just three variables: (1) the amount of liquid investment assets you are starting with, (2) the amount of time until retirement, and (3) the range of interest rates currently available from Investment Grade Securities. If you don’t allow the “engineer” gene to take control, this can be a fairly simple process. Even if you are young, you need to stop smoking heavily and to develop a growing stream of income… if you keep the income growing, the Market Value growth (that you are expected to worship) will take care of itself. Remember, higher Market Value may increase hat size, but it doesn’t pay the bills.

First deduct any guaranteed pension income from your retirement income goal to estimate the amount needed just from the investment portfolio. Don’t worry about inflation at this stage. Next, determine the total Market Value of your investment portfolios, including company plans, IRAs, H-Bonds… everything, except the house, boat, jewelry, etc. Liquid personal and retirement plan assets only. This total is then multiplied by a range of reasonable interest rates (6%, to 8% right now) and, hopefully, one of the resulting numbers will be close to the target amount you came up with a moment ago. If you are within a few years of retirement age, they better be! For certain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this process will give you a clear idea of where you stand, and that, in and of itself, is worth the effort.
Organizing the Portfolio involves deciding upon an appropriate Asset Allocation… and that requires some discussion. Asset Allocation is the most important and most frequently misunderstood concept in the investment lexicon. The most basic of the confusions is the idea that diversification and Asset Allocation are one and the same. Asset Allocation divides the investment portfolio into the two basic classes of investment securities: Stocks/Equities and Bonds/Income Securities. Most Investment Grade securities fit comfortably into one of these two classes. Diversification is a risk reduction technique that strictly controls the size of individual holdings as a percent of total assets. A second misconception describes Asset Allocation as a sophisticated technique used to soften the bottom line impact of movements in stock and bond prices, and/or a process that automatically (and foolishly) moves investment dollars from a weakening asset classification to a stronger one… a subtle "market timing" device.
Finally, the Asset Allocation Formula is often misused in an effort to superimpose a valid investment planning tool on speculative strategies that have no real merits of their own, for example: annual portfolio repositioning, market timing adjustments, and Mutual Fund shifting. The Asset Allocation formula itself is sacred, and if constructed properly, should never be altered due to conditions in either Equity or Fixed Income markets. Changes in the personal situation, goals, and objectives of the investor are the only issues that can be allowed into the Asset Allocation decision-making process.
For Fixed Income, focus on Investment Grade securities, with above average but not “highest in class” yields. With Variable Income securities, avoid purchase near 52-week highs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and keep individual holdings well below 5%. Keep individual Preferred Stocks and Bonds well below 5% as well. Closed End Fund positions may be slightly higher than 5%, depending on type. Take a reasonable profit (more than one years’ income for starters) as soon as possible. With a 60% Equity Allocation, 60% of profits and interest would be allocated to stocks.
Here are a few basic Asset Allocation Guidelines: (1) All Asset Allocation decisions are based on the Cost Basis of the securities involved. The current Market Value may be more or less and it just doesn’t matter. (2) Any investment portfolio with a Cost Basis of $100,000 or more should have a minimum of 30% invested in Income Securities, either taxable or tax free, depending on the nature of the portfolio. Tax deferred entities (all varieties of retirement programs) should house the bulk of the Equity Investments. This rule applies from age 0 to Retirement Age – 5 years. Under age 30, it is a mistake to have too much of your portfolio in Income Securities. (3) There are only two Asset Allocation Categories, and neither is ever described with a decimal point. All cash in the portfolio is destined for one category or the other. (4) From Retirement Age – 5 on,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Income Allocation needs to be adjusted upward until the “reasonable interest rate test” says that you are on target or at least in range. (5) At retirement, between 60% and 100% of your portfolio may have to be in Income Generating Securities.
The reason people assume the risks of investing in the first place is the prospect of achieving a higher rate of return than is attainable in a risk free environment…i.e., an FDIC insured bank account. Risk comes in various forms, but the average investor’s primary concerns are “credit” and “market” risk… particularly when it comes to investing for income. Credit risk involves the ability of corporations, government entities, and even individuals, to make good on their financial commitments; market risk refers to the certainty that there will be changes in the Market Value of the selected securities. We can minimize the former by selecting only high quality (investment grade) securities and the latter by diversifying properly, understanding that Market Value changes are normal, and by having a plan of action for dealing with such fluctuations. (What does the bank do to get the amount of interest it guarantees to depositors? What does it do in response to higher or lower market interest rate expectations?)

"Love is in need of love..." Thank you for those words Stevie Wonder. And I would tweek it slightly to say that love is in need of Self-Love today. How can we allow our bodies to become unhealthy, overweight, and stressed out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if we truly love ourselves?
When you love something outside of yourself, consider how you treat it? Whether it be your partner, child,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], friend, or home, you are focused on protecting, nurturing and caring for your precious ones and things. We can change history at any moment we choose to do so. Women are so use to loving outside of themselves. Workaholics are driven by their needs. The way we choose to perceive things is governed by our values and beliefs, our upbringing and life experiences. Having chosen a particular stance, we look for evidence that we are correct. Because we continue to interpret things in a very specific way we can always find evidence to substantiate our belief. We then interpret subsequent events in the same way and our perception becomes entrenched.
In order to influence anyone else, the first stage is to understand their world, to step into their shoes and to perceive the world through their eyes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to appreciate how they are feeling. To get beneath their behaviours and language and try to understand what underpins their beliefs and behaviours. To be open to what drives them to be the people they are. Doing this will change your perception and it is this which can make a significant difference to the way we feel about them and provide an opportunity to make a lasting change. It is not an instant thing but a process which by changing the way you respond to someone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not only do you have a completely different feeling about the situation, you also offer them the opportunity to change too.

There were so many things she did to make each of us feel special and I wish that I had a clearer memory of the entire year. But I do remember receiving the award for eating the most ice cream sandwiches in class (I still love those darn things!),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], getting the lead in the play where I got to sing California Here I Come which was always a dream of mine (and a big deal because I was so incredibly shy back then) and probably most importantly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the smile that was ever present on her face. When I got a bit older my mother shared a story with me about my favorite teacher. It was always customary to give the teacher a gift at Christmas time. We gave Mrs. Hurley a nightgown. I think it may have been light green if I remember correctly. Mrs. Hurley then wrote a note to my mother (as I’m sure she did with all the other students), but it was one that my mother kept for years in her drawer and forever in her heart.
I don’t remember if I told her the story of the letter all those years ago, and if I didn’t I apologize because I definitely should have. Thankfully, she and I have kept in touch through Christmas cards, emails and now Facebook. I’m also very proud to say that she’s on this distribution list as well.
It was a message through Facebook. Carolyn Hurley, my second grade teacher in Buffalo NY, had let me know that she finally posted her picture! I couldn’t wait to log on and see it. And there she was,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the same beautiful smiling face that I remember from so many (eek!) years ago. She was such an amazing teacher. As a child,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you knew from day one that this woman absolutely loved what she did and all those in Ebenezer Elementary school who had the privilege of passing through her class were the better for it.

Understanding the climate at the time helps to explain why Mrs. Hurley’s letter to my mother was so special. Mrs. Hurley took the time to sit down and write a thank you note to each of the parents for the Christmas gifts she received. I don’t know what she wrote in the other letters, but the letter to my mother brought her to tears each time she read it. Mrs. Hurley took the time to tell my mom that she thought she was doing an amazing job raising me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that I was a good student and a joy to have in her class (ok, I’m sure she said that about all the kids) but also she went on to say some specifics about me and my personality and how impressed she was that my mom was able to keep a full-time job (she was a Registered Nurse) and have time to raise me. My mother had little time for friends or socializing so compliments were very few and far between for my mom and the letter that Mrs. Hurley wrote meant more to my mother than she could have ever expressed at the time. Now all these years later, that letter still means the world to me. Thank you Mrs. Hurley!!

Years later when I was in my early 20s I was sitting at the corner of the bar at a Friday’s Restaurant in Buffalo, NY. I was with my boyfriend at the time and I glanced over and was shocked to see Mrs. Hurley! I looked at Jim and told him who she was and how she was my very favorite teacher ever. Still a bit shy at the time, he told me that I should go say hello. I told him that there was no way she’d remember me. It had been years and so many children had passed through her classroom, I would only embarrass her if I said hello and she didn’t remember me. He convinced me that I was totally wrong so I got up the nerve and said hi. Without missing a beat she looked at me and said Beckie! I smiled so big and said, “Close! That’s my mom.” And she said, oh my gosh, Kathie. I grew up to look just like my mother and now that I was in my early twenties, I looked very similar to what my mother looked like in her early thirties,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when Mrs. Hurley knew her. I could not believe that she not only remembered me, but remembered my name and MY MOTHER’S name! You could have knocked me over with a feather.

I started my day this morning pretty much the same way I always do; I take a couple turns at the snooze alarm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], get up and make coffee, walk my dogs and then check my email. Pretty standard stuff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but this morning I received an email that got me thinking (go figure right?).
So when times get a bit rough and you need a bit of a break,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], perhaps we can take a short vacation by coming up with a memory that brings you joy. Going through old pictures,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], calling a friend or even finding some cute video on YouTube might help bring about that mini-vacation that we all deserve.
Getting the email from Mrs. Hurley this morning brought back so many wonderful memories of second grade, my mother and my childhood. Memories that I hadn’t tapped into for quite a long time, and how silly right?
In these times when money seems to be more scarce everyday, the one thing that is still free (and can’t be taxed!) is our memories. I just love the following quote;
To set the stage, this was the early 70s in West Seneca (a suburb of Buffalo) and my mother was a single parent. Today’s society is much more forgiving than it was back then. I’ll never forget another teacher (3rd grade) who gave our class the project of drawing our family tree. It was just supposed to be the immediate family of parents, brothers and sisters. Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you can imagine how quickly I finished the project, it was just my mother and I after all. When the teacher came over to give me some assistance (clearly I couldn’t be done so quickly) she told me that I had to include everyone. I explained that I didn’t have any brothers or sisters. She then asked why I hadn’t included my father. I told her I didn’t have one. She began asking; Did he pass away? No… Was he in the military? No… Was my mother divorced (she had a hard time even saying that word)? No… I remember her starring at me trying to figure out which scenario she hadn’t thought of and I just kind of looked back. Then it dawned on her, Was your mother ever married? No. Well that was it! The teacher looked at me as though she had finally seen the devil’s horns on my head that clearly must have been there the entire time. She marched away from me and never treated me the same way again. Thankfully she was pretty mean to everyone so she didn’t focus her attention just on me. Rumor had it that she was in a tornado at some point in her life and as a result,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she hated kids. That’s what we told ourselves anyway.

Are you a woman who has it all? Are you doing what you love and getting recognized for it?
1. Believe you deserve it. If you don’t believe it – nobody will. And why should they? When a woman doesn’t believe she deserves what she wants she sends off signals - mostly subconscious. The signals are in her words, her body language and her tone.
6. You have what it takes. Start behaving, thinking and feeling everything that will push you to pursue the very thing you want. Protect your ability to go for it. Cultivate your talents, skills or your know-how.
3. Get tough. No, you don’t need to become a NWA wrestler! Decide how you want to react to what others think of you. Your emotional state is controlled only by you. Everyone has an opinion – it does not need to be the one you adopt.

If you do, congratulations! If you don’t, no need to worry because there is a way to influence what you deserve. The good news is you have the potential to make it happen.

5. Ditch the naysayers. Let go of people who put your down – who do not believe you deserve what you want. Surround yourself with mentors. Better yet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], positive women who influence what they deserve. These women will never tell you it can’t be done.
There’s one problem,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Some women don’t know they deserve it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Women who know and get what they deserve share a distinct pattern. It starts with these six steps:
Do you have a super career, outstanding personal relationships,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and feel healthy and confident?
Every woman has the power to influence what she deserves.
Each of these steps leads to success when you do this one thing – start with you. You have to believe. You have to give up the past. You can control your emotions. You have the courage to ask. You will let go of negative influence. You can do what it takes. Nobody is doing it for you.
2. Give up the past,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Do you take a negative past event and expect it to happen in the future,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? The past is only good for learning from and reminiscing good times. Live in the here and now.
Don’t settle for less than you deserve in any area of your life. Your job is to explore all ways you influence your opportunities – you are gifted with more talent than you realize.
4. Ask for what you deserve. Thinking it’s not meant to be if you have to ask for it is bunk,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! Or are you under the impression that it’s not proper for a woman to ask? Check this stinking thinking at the door.
Getting what you deserve requires more than simply wishing for it. You have to get serious about wanting it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], planning what to do and seeing it through.
It doesn’t matter if it’s recognition for a great performance, a commitment from ‘the one’ or the last piece of pie.
